Background
The Swedish population of the black guillemot is critically endangered, partly because of predation by the invasive and non-native American mink. Previous research shows that climate change will likely negatively affect the black guillemot but positively affect the American mink. The combined negative effect of climate change and increased predation might have large consequences for the Swedish black guillemot population.
 
This project was set up to assess the threat of climate change on the Swedish black guillemot. Modern modelling techniques to obtain information on past, current and future distributions of species combined with fieldwork to monitor the current black guillemot population and gain more insight in its breeding ecology, will be used to answer questions like: 1) How severe will the impact of climate change be? 2) Which populations are most at risk? 3) What can we do to conserve this population?

Main study region
For now, two breeding colonies of black guillemot are monitored, one on the island Lillbådan and one on the island Obolla-Storbådan, near the town of Obolla in northern Sweden.
